Advanced player stats glossary

-EFF= Efficiency Rating from WNBA.com.

Higher ranking is better

(((Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks) - ((Field Goals Att. - Field Goals Made) + (Free Throws Att. - Free Throws Made) + Turnovers))

-Defensive Value

Higher ranking is better

Defensive value: Used to approximate a player’s defensive value to her team based upon blocks, defensive rebounds, steals, and personal fouls. How valuable is a player to her team defensively? The formula describes the value of a player’s defensive contributions per 40 minutes. ((dreb * .511 + stls * 1.60 + blks * .98 + pf * -.22)/minutes) * 40.

-Usage

 Higher ranking is better

((FGA + 0.44 * FTA + TOV) * (Tm MP / 5)) / (MP * (Tm FGA + 0.44 * Tm FTA + Tm TOV))

-Player Stat Profile

-Stat profile= Players listed as scorer, perimeter, interior based on stats. They may be listed under different ratings.

-True shooting %

Higher ranking is better

Used for players or teams, true shooting percentage describes a team’s field goal, three point, and free throw shooting. How well does a team shoot when taking free throw shooting and three-point shooting into account? The formula is a ratio of points scored per total field goal attempts and free throw attempts, thus accounting for the additional points scored on three pointers. TS% = Pts/(2*(FGA + (.44*FTA)))

-Offensive Rebound Percentage

Offensive rebound percentage is an estimate of the percentage of available offensive rebounds a player grabbed while he was on the floor.
the formula is 100 * (ORB * (Tm MP / 5)) / (MP * (Tm ORB + Opp DRB)).

-Free Throw Rate

-= FTA/FGA

-Pure point rating

Higher ranking is better

Used mostly for point guards, pure point rating can be used as a proxy for point guard quality by approximating the rate at which a player creates scoring opportunities for others. How well does a player balance the benefit of creating an assist with the cost of creating a turnover? The formula describes the net value of scoring opportunities a player created for teammates per minute played. 100*((ast*2/3)-to)/mins

-Points per empty possession(Pts/zpt)

Higher ranking is better

How often is a player individually responsible for the added value of scoring possessions and the cost of non-scoring possessions? The formula describes the number of points a player scores per missed field goals, missed free throws, and turnovers. Pts/(FGx*.693 + FTx/2*.693 + to).

-Turnover Percentage

Lower ranking is better

How often does a possession end with a turnover? The formula describes the number of turnovers per possession for a team or player.

(Note: this number is actually different for players and teams -- for teams it's an estimate of possessions so you subtract offensive rebounds because those technically extend one possession. For players, you can look at that or the percentage per 100 plays => 100 * TOV / (FGA + 0.44 * FTA + TOV).)

-Estimated touches per game

Touches estimate the number of times a player touched the ball in an attacking position on the floor. The theory behind the formula is that once a player gets the ball, he can only do one of four things (aside from dribbling, of course): pass, shoot, draw a foul, or commit a turnover.

Touches=Field Goal Attempts + Turnovers + (Free Throw Attempts / (Team's Free Throw Attempts/Opponents Personal Fouls)) + (Assists/0.17)

-Percent of touches that have ended in shots.

%Shoot = 100 * FGA / Touches. The percentage of a player's touches that ended with him taking a shot and not being fouled in the act.

-Percent of touches that have ended in passes.

%Pass = 100 * (AST / 0.17) / Touches. The percentage of a player's touches that ended with him passing to a teammate in an attacking position on the floor.

-Percent of touches that have ended in turnovers.

%TO = 100 * Turnovers / Touches. The percentage of a player's touches that ended with him turning the ball over.

-Percent of touches that have ended in getting fouled.

%Fouled= 100 * (FTA / (Tm FTA / Opp PF)) / Touches. The percentage of a player's touches that ended with him drawing a foul.
